Germany has routes across the North Sea and Baltic to Scandinavia and Russia.
Known as an industrial powerhouse, Germany also has many beautiful locations to visit, in the south the Black Forest and Bavarian Alps, further north the Rhine passes through lowlands with cities such as Heidelberg on its banks.
Culturally Germany has brought major thinkers to the world and produced many inventions. There are a number of theatres and opera houses, and Germans can listen to orchestral music through the year from famous composers such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Brahms and Wagner.
Painters from the Renaissance, Surrealism, Baroque movements work are shown across Germany, and more recently from the Bauhaus movement.
The capital Berlin well known for its nightlife and culture, Munich in the south is a good stopping place on the way to the Alps with the Oktoberfest beer festival, and Cologne with its immense gothic cathedral is a good base for exploring the Rhine.
